Hello…The big C

It’s not easy to talk about it. We never want to have to deal with it, but few of us can say we know no-one who has, or has ever had, cancer. It isn’t a new thing either. The ancient Egyptians spoke of it at the time of the pyramids! A few generations ago here it was called ‘consumption’ or ‘a growth’ and sufferers were hidden away from public life, but it was there. Cancer used to be condisered almost always a terminal illness

Three things have changed.

One; we can talk about cancer without it being a taboo.

Two; sadly it is a more common diagnosis than it used to be and recognised cancer research organisations tell us that 1 in every 2 of us will get cancer at some time in our lives!

Three; surgery and treatment for cancer has come a long way in recent years with many now ‘living with’ cancer for many years, or even being declared ‘cancer free’.

SEMERON

Semeron is an organisation set up by cancer sufferers for cancer sufferers. So where does the name semeron come from? Most of us who have had a cancer diagnosis have come to value time in a new way and the value of each new day. We also have learned rather than looking very far ahead, to live one day at a time.

As Christians the Lord’s Prayer is very familiar – and so we take the words of Jesus “give us this day…” very seriously. The words of Jesus were originally in the greek language and the word for this day is σήμερον which is in English is semeron. So Semeron- this day is our motto: To live this day to the full by the grace and strength only God can give.
